(TO THE EDITOE OF THE SOUTHLAND TIMES ) Sib, — I noticed in. the columns of a local journal a few clays since, a letter signed . " Southlander," in which the writer denounces the insane system of vituperative correspondence which has been exercising so suicidal an influence over the affairs of the Province. The effect upon strangers who read the late files of the journal alluded to, must be something edifying ; their first impression will be, that there niuat be something very "rotten in the state of Den- i mark" to cause all this ; what the member for Wainiwa (in a late session of the Provincial Council, in the course of his savory little simile about the Augean \ stables and Mr Hercules,) denominated | stink. It must be patent to every observant reader, that the generality of these effusions are the effect of private spite, and one and all aim more at endeavoring to wound the feelings and blacken the reputation of the individual attacked, than to enlighten the public in open discussion upon any subject of public interest. It is a pity that a certain section of the Southland Press should prostitute itself to such ends in a manner so much calculated to derogate from the high position that the fourth estate does, and should always hold, in the hearts of Britons. I am, &c, Pax. Inrercargill, 13th, June.
