PETITION.

The following is the petition presented to his Honor the Superintendent, regarding the North Eoad, and his reply to it : — To HIS HotfOE THE STTPEBnTTESDENT, Southland. Sib, — The undersigned beg to call your attention to the state of the North Road, especially that part betweeu Invercargill and Wallaeetown which is almost impassable, there being also other very bad places, along the line of road ; viz., Brown's Culvert, parts of Wenton Centre, and last Bushes. And would stiggest that a quantity of fascines be cut and placed in the worst holes, leaving a sufficient number stacked along the road, thus enabling the carriers to place them on the holes from time to time, as may be required. If something is not done immediately towards repairing this road, nearly the whole trade of tbe Lake District must, and will go to Dunedin for the winter.
