' Bunster's Valparaiso .Freight Girnular of February Ist gives us the following items in regard to the Spanish hostilities : " On the eve oi the departure of the last mail steamer, the Spanish vessels of war blockading the port of Caldera— the < Numancia,' ' Berenguela, ' Marquez de la Victoria' — together with their prize, the British steamer ' Matius Gousine,' arrived at this port. Previous to abandoning Caldera, the Spaniards despatched to Spain some two or three of their prizes, laden, with ores, &c, and set fire to and destroyed the rest (eight vessels), after 'stripping theur of everything. Yesterday the Coininander-in- Chief of the Spanish ! squadron issued a decree declaring all Chilian coal as contraband of war, even ; under the protection of neutral flags, until such time as his Government may otherwise direct." The same authority adds the following in regard to freights : — " Transactions "in charters have been very numerous during the past fortnight, with a further ad- • vance in rates. The market still . continues very firm, with several orders still ' unexecuted."
