Bank discount was lowered on 15th March from seven to six per cent' ; demand active. No change since. Jointstock banks work cautiously at 5i discount.
Consols, money 86f- to -§■; business quiet. IN ew Zealand Six per Cents, and New. South Wales Five Per Cent. Loan dull of inquiry. Home capitalists require more liberal terms.
§||The cotton market is flat, with declining tendency. Colonial Railway shares are steady. London Joint-Stock Discount Company, capital £400,000, collapsed, causing great depression in shares of all other finance and • credit companies. Wild speculation, and heavy loss is ensuing. -The bank-pi! Australasia has declared a dividend at the rate of fourteen per cent, per annum. Puget, Banibridge, and Co., bankers, of fc>t. Paul's Churchyard, have suspended payment.
Colonial Gfovernment Securities. — Victorian, Sixes, April and October, 106 to 107 ; New South Wales Fives, no quotations ; do. do., 1871 to 1876, 90 to 95 ; Queensland Sixes, January and July, 98 to 100 ; South Australia, 1878 upwards, 105 to 107 ; New Zealand do., 93 to 95.
The exports to Australia, including New Zealand, show a decrease of £15,594 : — To Sydney, a decrease of £57,759 j to Queensland, a decrease of £10,535 ; to New Zealand, a decrease of £38,798 ; to Adelaide, an increase of £91,106; to Tasmania, an increase of £3,758.
