THE EARLY CLOSING MOVEMENT.
TO THE EDITOB OE THE SOUTHLAND TIMES. j Sic, — I trust you will be good enough to insert the few following remarks in behalf of the drapers assistants in this town. In reference to the Early Closing Movement — we do and shall have, no doubt, a great number of wet nights • during the winter, I cannot see why some of the drapers should keep their places of business open as late as half-past six, and even 7 p.m. (unless it is to waste a considerable quantity of kerosene oil, a matter which is an item between profit and loss), when the others close regularly at six p.m. I think, Sir,' it is high time that succh should begin to mend their ways. I must not forget to remark that I am not in any way individually interested in the matter of the early closing movement, neither am I connected with any of the drapery and clothing establishments in. this town ; but having been for a considerable time in that line of trade, lam entitled to give an opinion. lam well aware~ of the folly of keeping late hours. It is a loss to the proprietors and an injury to the assistants who it unfits for their duty to their employers, and prohibits them giving that attention to mental culture which they require. Now, Sir, before I conclude, I would beg to call attention to the remark in a local journal this time last year, it' was as. follows :— " We notice that the- drapers and outfitters have agreed. (I trust they will agree this time also) to close their respective places of Business at 6 p.m., during the winter months. "We should be glad to see the example . generally followed. As a rule no benefit, but a positive loss results to all retaiL business from late hours." • Trusting this will be suflicient fco convince employers, of the folly of keeping late hours, I now conclude. Tours, &c, Eaie Plat.
