THURSDAY, sth APRIL.
William Campbell was charged with stealing 27^1bs. of tobacco from the New York Hotel, on the 4th inst. It appears that a box containing tobacco was placed in the bar of the hotel, and the prisoner had been sitting' on it for some time. The cook came into the bar after prisoner had left and found the box forced open. He immediately followed the prisoner and seized him. Prisoner then dropped a large piece*" of tobacco and asked to be let go. A policeman appeared opportunely, and prisoner and tobacco were handed over to the officer. The evidence having been completed, the prisoner made a statement in which he denied taking the tobacco, and asserted that he saw a man running before him when the cook seized him. He was fully committed for trial.
