"Southland Times" Office. Thursday evening. Business during the month has been brisk, showing a great improvement upon prceeding months. This may be attributed to the large number of wool-laden drays which hare arrived in town to be re-loaded with station supplies The demand as been quite equal to the supply, and stocks are unusually low. Many of the leading articles of consumption are exceedingly scarce. The flour market shows a downward tendency, owing to the arrival of considerable parcels of Chilian. Still we may quote Adelaide silk-dressed at from £30 to £31 ; Chilian at £22 to £12 10s. Sugars, first-class, are scarce and in demand, Pickles are inquired for, and command a ready sale. Sound beer (in bulk) i 3 scarce, and in demand ; brandy is also inquired for. Oats are scarce, and much enquired after. The market is also bare of bottled beer, candles, and oatmeal. Hams and bacon are very scarce, and prices rating unusually high. Butter (imported) is greatly in demand. The following are the Customs Returns for the past two days : — . j Wednesday.
