A most extensive and destructive fire has taken place in Madaggan-street, Dunedin. It is estimated that about £20,000 worth of property has been destroyed, very little of which was insured » upwards of thirty houses were destroyed, and many families left penniless. The origin of the fire has not yet been ascertained. It commenced at the Caledonian Boarding House, and a strong wind blowing spread with rapid progress up the street, and also downwards and at the back reaching almost to High-Btreet, sweeping away everything before it — flakes of fire being carried into Statford-street. It cleared the whole block from the Sandinavian Hotel to Toinlonson's Stables which jjwere also consumed. There were many other Buffers who cleared out furniture &c, which in the excitement was much damaged. The following will show a very small amount was insured. The insnrance companies losses -are : — Royal, £200; New Zealand £1,200; Imperial £750 ; Australian, £300. From the Nelson Examiner, we learn tha, ' the Watmea election had resulted in the defeat of Mr. Saunders, the Superintendent of the Province, and the return of Mr. A. ft. Ollivier by a majority of 7. News from the Grey had been received up to the 21st, when there was some excitement about the discovery of fresh ground to j the north of that river." The great railway case of Bruce and others v. the Queen, which involves an immense amount of . money is not yet furnished. The Argus 2nd . March, says : — " The trial at bar of Bruce and ' others v. the Queen yesterday reached its sixteenth weary day. The thirteenth, of the thirty items of . claim in contest was reached in the evidence ior the defence. Probably two or three more days will complete the evidence. If there be no < rebutting case of any sort, the arguments on points of law will probably be gone into next J week, and the case be finished early in the week , following." We clip the following from the Canterbury Press : — " Mr. Sewell having announced his intention of not standing again, a numeorusly signed £ requisition has been got up in Taranaki and , forwarded to Major Eichardson, requesting him \ to allow himself to be nominated as the repreaen- • tative of that district in the General Assembly. £ No reply had been received from the Major up j
