MINING ITEMS.

In noticing the accounts from Okarita, the Kohitika Chronicle, of the 14th inst., says: — "News from Okarita does not in any way confirm the statement made a few days since in Hokitika, that a special messenger had brought intelligence of heavy gold having been struck some few miles inland. Neither the Bruce nor the Baliarat brings any tidings on the subject. There are many parties still prospecting up the Okarita River, but tidings of the whereabouts, or information as to their success rarely comes to hand. Provisions are taken up the river by boat and pack-horse for some miles, and the miners have very little occasion to come down to the town. Mr. Sholl, agent to the O.P.Q. (Waipori) Quartz Company, reports the crushing for the last fortnight to be 130 tons, yielding 142| ozs, value £537 18s 9d ; expenses for the same time, d£l6o IBs Od ; nett balance, £377 ; out_ of which the directors have declared a dividend of 25s per £50 share for the fortnight. The Mining Journal says : — " It has recently been found that the shales of unctuous clay overlaying the ironstone deposits of the Yorkshire Moors, in the North Riding, can be made to produce a mineral oil similar to petroleum, at a cost of 6d per gallon. From the fact that these shales crops out to the surface j in almost all the valleys, the discovery i I expected to impart a wonderful degree of activity on those hills, unpeopled since the days when Roman legions held them in military occupation."
