LITERARY AND SOCIAL ASSOCIATIONS.
TO THE EDITOE OF THE SOUTHLAND TIMES. Sic, — It . appears to be a great pity that some effort is not made to give life to the doings of the Committee of the Mechanic's Institute. It is evident that we shall have left a large number who can, and do appreciate, an evening intellectually spent. If we are by chance visited by professionals of a high character the Theatre is full, which argues in favor of my supposition that if entertaining lectures or readings were got up fortnightly, or even monthly, it would be the means of doing much good, create a taste for elevating aspirings, and lead many who now know not what to do, to spend an evening profitably.— l am, Sir, A Mechanic. Tay-street, Invercargill, 23rd Feb., 1866.
