SlB, — 111 the letter -which I inserted in the Southland JVWs yesterday, there is an error in which Mr. Chalmers is censured' for giving out the contract for the Motomoko Jetty. Mr. Chalmers did not accept that contract, for I find it was accepted long before he was Deputy. I was led into the mistake by his having inserted in the Gazette the acceptance, and published it on the 13th of December, that is' five weeks after he was Deputy-Superintendent. I was thus led to suppose, from the Gazette, that at the time it was published it was accepted. Of course, as a member of the Executive alone, he has to bear the responsibility of the act. I exceedingly regret the mistake, and reinain yours, &c, W. S l . TARLTON. Inrercargill, Nov. 15, 1864. •-. - -. ■ ■ . * . .'■■'« . ■ ' "'..■-■ ' ' TOTHE EDITOR. OJ? THE SOTJTHI.AKD TUEB9.
