A terrific cyclone passed over Calcutta on th« 19th. October. The destruction of life and property which occurred in the short spaCfl of fire hours is unprecedented. Scarcely a house o* building has escaped injury. Whole Tillage* have been swept away. The Botanical Gardens are totally destroyed. The estimated los» i» stated at over two millions sterling. ; Of 200 ships in the river, no more than 80 escaped. 16 were sunk, and great numbers dismasted and driven ashore. The Peninsular and : Oriental Ooy.'s steamers Tubal and Nemesis Trers dismasted, and tho Bengal went ashore. Opposite Garden Eeacb., the steamers Bentihek and Hindustan, : and six tug steamers were wrecked. "Estimated low of life in harbor, 300 souls.— On shore, one thousand. Q-raia and all other provisions hare gone up in price. Seeking ship 3 for immediate requirements and will continue to command high rates.
