From Dunedin — William Miskin, s.s., early. Trout London — Donna Anita. The s.s. City of Hobart left Port Chalmers at 5 o'clock p.m.. on the 27th inst., and experiencad light south-east winds, with thick weather. She made the harbor on (this) the morning of the 28th instant. She carried a full complement of passengers. The s.s. Albion left Hobson's Bay at 5 p.m. on the 22nd inst., and Port Phillip Heads on the morning of the 23rd. She experienced fine weather on the passage, and arrived at the Bluff on (this) the morning of the 28th. The steamship Alhambra, which wa9 reported rb having anchored at the Head 3on Tuesday evening, in consequence of some derangement of her machinery, was towed up to the usual anchorage by the steamer Favorite at an early hour this morning. She was afterwards warpedinto Mansford Bay, for the purpose of being beached, preparatory to proceeding with an examination of the injury. But previous to beaching lier, it was decided upon to obtain the services of the submarine driver, Mr. Watson, and, on an examination being made by him, it was found that the mainshaft had broken close to the screw, which remained suspended bj the after bearings. : This injury is necessarilly of so serious a character that, without the facility of a patent slip, ifc will be impossible to effect the repairs here. The Alhambra will therefore have to. proceed to Melbourne under sail, after her screw is detached, and■yrith this view the coals in her after compartments are being taken out, so .as to place her on an eren keel for the prosecution of her passage. The passengers, of whom there were, a hundred, and nearly half the number in the cabin, will be transferred to the City. of. Hobart, which vessel will be despatched on Thursday afternoon instead of on Saturday,. as was latterly advertised. Hit is much to be regretted that' this port continues without the facilities for : effecting the repairs necessary in - such a case as that of" the Alhambra. . The engineering establishments in town, we xmdersfcand, are : quite ; competent to undertake the „ work . which, would be necessary, but without a slip, the ingenuity of engineers and their costly establishment are of no avail. Though there are 7eyery day occurring gome instances of the necessity qf a patent .slip/ a prominent case such, as the. present may have more effect t&an others, in directing the attention to the want from which, the port suffers, and to the urgent necessity for that being early met, by every possible encouragement being given to those who may be prepared to embark in the enterprise of raising a patent .slip -or- floating dock, at PortChahnen. — Otago Daily Timet'; 27th: inst.
