COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE

..." SOOTKLAKD TIHBS OIMOI. Friday Evening. The wTOue collected at tho Cußtom-kouie (or the past two days, for d«a^, *»^omi«! cSnitimplwaii was as Mow* :^*tardgy, £7818t. Bd., to-d»y, £33 7b, M. jl in, 'all, £101 J». Bd., beingdutie* levied. asfoUow»:--r,,...., „ . i

The adviws by the City ol Hobarfc from Melbourne, intimating a fluctuating tendency in the pnc«ofcflpur, will have the effect of exciting our market, and rendering both holder* snd buyers cautious in their transactions. From Sydney we; hear of large stocks being held, and the market ' there is likewise reported as completely unsettled. Lower prices, however, were not expected to rule. Last quotation is £23 for Adelaide. At Adelaide the closing prices on the 14th were from £23 to £25. A» yet we cannot alter our former quotations. • '--■'•■■_. i Potatoes hare again, risen in price, and to-day j we hear of £15 per ton being asked. . We hate to notice one arrival during the week. i.e., — tho brigantine Leonidas, from Melbourne. Sho brings a large cargo of general merchandise, ineluding considerable shipments of sugar, flour, &c. The Southland, barque, from Leith, i» now j entering the harbor. A meeting of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerco was convened for Thursday last, but laDsed for want of a quorum. Some subjects of importance were to have been discussed; inter alia, the low price of gold obtainable in Invercargill, (compared with that procurable in Dunedin, and even on the goldfields themselves) to the serious detriment of our local trade ; and the indisposition of our Banks to discount the Lakes paper. The subject of the establishment of some company or institution for buying gold here, and thereby concentrating trade, was also to have been mooted, as well as a proposal to have duty paid goods from IJlinodiil, subject to increased Jetty dues on arrival here. That there should bo • speedy change in the price of gold here, we may mention that this week a man with eleven pounds weight was offered by one of our banks Is. 6d. per ounce less than he would have got for it at the Lakes, while another bank positively refused to purchase it. The last fortnightly escort to Dune<fi& conveyed to town 13,599 ozs. 3 dwts., from the various goldfields. _ By the City of Hobart, we have later Australian files. We extract tho following report from the Argus of the 15th instant :— "In the import market inquiries have been brisker to-day than for some time past, and gonerally a better feeling seems to have been induced by the tenor of the news to hand. In breadstuffs the only transaction of importance wa9 tho sale of 6,000 bushels of wheat ex Dominiquez Hermanos, at a price which has not been made public. Four remains unsettled, and no reliable quotations can be given. In malt, the demand continues active, but holders do not seem anxious to operate. Ten shillings and upwards is being asked, but wo j have heard of one bin changing hands at 9s. 6d., ( net cash. Bulk and bottled beer manifests an \ upward tendency. Byass's stout, a trade lot, has changed hands at 9a., and in quantities, at Bs. j 10&d. In bulk brandy, also, tho newa to hand of i a probable scarcity in this season's crops, has caused the market to look up ; no transactions, ! however, are reported. For corn sacks, to arrive, ■ 21s. are freely offered. In cheeses, North Wilts, ■ales have been effected at lid. Caustic soda ia reported in better demand ; as also salt, though as yet there is no variation in price. By Auction, there have been sales of several parcels of tobacco, ex Lincolnshire and White Star, comprising 100 half-tierces of southern twists, consisting of Orion, Childrey, and Jon.e's, Carrier Dove, Ijjona, and Kerr'o brands, at from 2s, 3d. to 2a. 6d. perlb. ; in bond, | and with all faults, at le. Id. for three-quarter and Is. 6d. for half pounds ; also, seventy thre» quarter boxes (tens) at Is. 3d. to Is. 3d. per lb. For Kerosene oil there has been renewed inquiry, owing to no shipments from New York or Boston to this port being advised by the mail, and sb. 10id. has been offered and refused for all the Downer's and Cozzen's in hand. 250 cases of Downer's are reported to have changed hands at 6s. Subsequently, an offer of slightly under ss. lOd. was made for two-thirds of the shipment of Cozsen's, to arrive ex Kensington, end refused, the holder declining to sell under ss. lOd. for the parcel, and 6s. for small trade lots. Private advices from Dunedin state that the cargo of Chilian flour ex Huana Rosa Alcaras, arrived on the sth inst., was disposed of at £24 ger ton. At Sydney, according to the telegram irom our own correspondent, fine flour is quoted at £23, and seconds, at £21." Under date August 15. Messrs. Stables, Straker tad Co. report as follows : — " Although the departures for the Australian and New Zealand colonies have been fully up to the average curing the past month, we aie glad to find the value of export* thither shows a material decline upon our returns for the month of JuneJuly, which, by the addition of late entries to a very considerable extent, amounted to £876,067 ; whilst for the month now under review, our aggregated values, exclusive of New Zealand, amount J to £684,343 only, giving' the welcome decrease of £186,224 upon the already reduced totals recorded in our iasneof 15th July. We take the present opportunity of again drawing the attention of merchants to the frequmt practice of delaying the completion of entries until, in some instances, • many weeks "- after the vessel's clearance. A treasonable delay is, no doubt, desirable, and even advantageous, as giving the opportunity for a J more detailed and : specific entry by the shipper Ithan could otherwise be the case, where the goods put onboard are of a multifarious character ; but, in the ; intereit ol all our subscribers, .we would urge that the'ebndition of this proviso is that the delay should be only 'reasonable.' The late entries recorded in the usual column for ships j cleared last month amount to about £60,000— I nearly one-tenth of the month's report, and in some instances apply to vessels which cleared three day s prior to date of receipt. ; The respective constituents 6f the totals above given, are as: follows : — Melbourne— July, August, £338,925 : June, July, £472,974 ; decrease, £134,048.
