Thubsday, 20th October, 1884. (Before H. M'Culloch, Esq., 8.M.) Drunkenness. — W. Bridges, for this offence, was fined sb. LABCEKT. Thomas Todd and William Wakefield were charged with stealing clothing from a dray, on the road from Kingston to Riverton, in the beginning of last month. Detective-olHcer Thompson conducted the caie for the proiecution. A great deal of evidence being adduced, Mr. Button, who defended the prisoners, contended that there was no case against them. The property had neither been identified, nor was there any proof that a felony had been committed. Detective Thompson said, that had it not been for the potitdve manner in which one of the witnesseß swore to the goods at Riverton, the other witnesses would not hare been brought down from the Jfokomai. The Magistrate said the case had broken down from first, to last. The swearing of some of the witnesses had been moat scandalous, and heihould leave it in the hands of tho police to take what proceedings they deemed desirable to bring homo the crime of perjury to them. . . j The prisoners were then discharged.
