Wo are compelled to hold over a variety of news received from the Northern Provinces and the Australian Colonies, our columns this morning being confined to a re*wne of the Eonth'o history for transmission by the outgoing mail. To-day, being the day fixed for the official opening of the Oreti Railway, the banks, Government offices, and principal places of business will remain' closed. W« beg to remind our readers and the public generally that twelve o'clock noon is the hour appointed for the opening train to start irom the railway station, on its inaugural trip on the Northern Railway. We beg to intimate that the lecture which was to be delivered in the Mechanics' Institute, this evening, is postponed till to-morrow evening, in . consequence of the public holiday on the occasion of the opening of the railway. A notice will be found in our advertising columns to that effect. Last night, Mr. Osborne, of local celebrity, nfet the electors of Invercargill in the Theatre Royal, to fovor them with an exposition of his political sentiments as a candidate for a seat in Council at the ensuing elections. There was a good attendance, and Mr. Pratt was called on to preside. [ After the candidate had addressed the meeting, & number of questions were asked, and a scene, which almost baffles description, ensued, in the midst of which the curtain dropped, putting an • end to the proceedings. We shall give a full report of the meeting in our next issue.
