On Tuesday, judgment was given against several persons who have not paid their Educational Assessment. V H.-Nurßej Esq., was chosen. ■ The only other appointments made at this time were those of drill-sergeant and paymaster, when the choice fell upon Messrs. Gr. Cassels and Crerar respectively. • Great interest is manifested in the . Volunteer movement in Riverton. - Immediately after the .meeting, of,-'; the Rifle Volunteer Company on Tuesday (writes, our'correspondent) a meeting was held for the i purpose of endeavoring to form a Cavalry Volunteer Company for the district, when twenty-four names were handed mat once. The meeting likewise "proceeded to the election of "interim " officers,, and Mr. Mackenzie was elected to the post of 'captain,- and Mr. Robert M'GiUivfay's bfler" to drill the company free of charge was unanimously accepted. The" meeting . then adjourned till the of Saturday first. . ■ A meetingof the local Committe in. connection with the New Zealand Exhibition, was held in the offices of His Honor the Superintendent, ycster : clay afternoon. There were prese.nt— Dr. -Menzieß (in the chuir), Messrs.- M'Culloch, Dundas, Harnett," Baker, -M' Arthur, and^the^ -Rev. Mr. Tanner. The minutes of former.- meeting having been read and confirmed, the Secretary,. Mr. -J.IB. Taylor, reported that he had collected promised •übseriptipns, in aid of the expenses to be incurred in the entei'prise, to the amount of £59 13s. He had had only one subscriptionlist returned to him, and that was from Mr. Watt, of Campbelltown, accompanied by the sum of £lo 125., collected by him there. The secretary likewise reported tliat he had received a reply from Dr. Eccles, of Dunedin, intimating that a total floor space of five hundred square feet would be allotted for the Pro vince of Southland. A long discussion now ensued on the subject of funds wherewith to .carry out the work of a thorough- and satisfactory re presentation of the resources, &c, of Southland. One or two members present entertained very gloomy ideas on the success of the undertaking, and others evinced themselves very chary of being saddled with any liabilities. in..connection.with it ; but after one or two resolutions had been proposed and discussed, the following, ' proposed by Mr. M' Arthur, and seconded by Mr. M'Culloch, was adopted by the meeting, viz.—" That the members of committee will do their best to collect subscriptions and co-operate with the Government in collecting »ncl foi-w-axding exhibits, J>roTi 0 I the Grovernmer.t -vrilT guarantee the payment of any deficiency, (if any such deficiency should arise) in the funds required." Mr. Tanner then movedj and Mr. M'Culloch seconded, a resolution to the effect "That the Government be requested to settle with Mr. Taylor, the Secretary up to the present time, and that the Superintendent, and Messrs. M'Culloch, Dundas, and Baker, be appointed J> committee to make any fuhire financial arrangements.'' This motion was carried without opposition. A desultory conversation then took place, from which it was gathered that the committee still intend to continue thenappeal to the public for pecuniary assistance, and that they desire all exhibits to be sent in without delay to the Secretary at the Government Buildings. The proceedings- then terminated. In our issue of Tuesday it would be observed that a person named Nichol O'Donald had been bi-ought up before the Resident Magistrate on a charge of cattle stealing at Riyerton, under the name of David Johnston, and that the case being clearly one of mistaken identity, he was consequently discharged. O'Donald's case, however, being a very hard one. having been brought all the way from Picton to answer the charge, Mr. Commissioner Weldon has made representations to the Provincial Government on the subject, and the result is that O'DongJd will be sent back to Pictou at its expense. The appearance of the man " wanted " and that of O'Donald are said to differ widely, and it becomes a question of no small moment how far any person is safe from arrest at the hands of such men as Serjeant Bergin. The mere compliment of being granted a free passage to the place where arrested, it is to be feared, would not satisfy every one. Nor will the Province, compelled to incur such uncalled-for out' ay, feel itself justified in doling out from its cofiers what may justly be considered the penalties attaching to official bungling in another. " A general meeting of the United Invercargill Cricket Club was held last night, in Colyer's Princess Hotel, Dee-street. Mr. Kingsland occupied the chair. The business transacted was the following : — It was proposed by Mr. Scandrett, and seconded by Mr. Rout, and carried, " That the thanks of the club be given to the old committee for their exertions in bringing the business of the cldb in the past year to a successful issue." The past treasurer then reported that there was a balance in hand of a few pounds from the past year. It was then proposed by Mr. Colyer, and seconded by Mr. Cross, and carried, " That the following gentlemen be appointed the committee for the coming season, viz. — Messrs.. Kingsland, Rout, Colyer, Cross, Curtain, Scandrett, Wade, Dundas, and Paul, with power to add to their number." It was next proposed by Mr. Rout, and seconded by Mr. Cross; that Mr. Marchant be requested to act as secretary. — Carried. Mr. Scandrett afterwards moved "That Mr. Colyer be requested to act as treasurer." Mr. 'Rout seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. It was agreed that the next meeting of committee should take place on the evening of Monday first, the same to be convened by advertisement.. Th'a following members were enrolled, viz. : — -Messrs. Colyer, Rout,. Cross,^ Frew, Dundas, Wade, Bonar, Paul, Scandrett, Duff, Curtain, and Kingsland. The members of the club will meet for practice on Saturday first, at 2 p.m; _. /'•_ ;. 'i 1. "1 .' ''■ The Daily Southern Cross .of 16th ultimo, reports that " A meeting of :a few of the influential business men of Auckland was held yesterday, with the view o/' discussing the present rate of discount charged by the banks, and it was ultimately resolved to prescn' a requisition toliave the rate of discount reduced to 8 per cent, per annum, the rate being considered much!too high, and consequently a prevention of legitimate trade and commerce." . „ - The Auckland -Weekly News has; the following : - — " Since, the B,ale of.Ngaruawahia, an impetus, has been given to the settlement)-- of 'the .Waikato* country.
