Should this request be acceded to, we pledge ourselves to do our best to secure your return. We are, Dear Sir, Yours faithfully, JOHN HARE. THOS. PERKINS. W. G. JENKINS. WILLIAM MOFFITT. THOS. M'EVVEN. ROBERT M'ALLISTER. H. E. OSBORNE. WALTER HARRIS. ROBERT TAPPER. THOMAS MIDDLETON. WILLIAM G. AYTON. T. J. WHITE. THOMAS PRATT. CHARLES MORRIS. JOHN DAVIDSON. JOSKPU HARRISON. BARTLET L. NYE. ARCHIBALD SCOTT. W. P. AYTON. WILLIAM RUSSELL. S. T. BULL. Inrercargill, 29th Sept., 186 i. TO MESSRS. HARE, PERKINS, AND JENKINS, and the other Gentlemen signing the requisition. ("^ ENTLEMEN, — I have great pleasure in acX ceding to your request that I will allow myself to be nominated as a Candidate for a Seat in* the Provincial Council to represent your important district. I shall take an early opportunity of meeting the Electors, and laving before them a statement of my political views, and beg to subscribe myself, Gentlemen, Your most obedient servant, C. S. BUTTON. Inrercargill, 29th Sept., 1861. TO THE ELECTORS OF INVERCARGILL DISTRICT. f> ENTLEMEN, — I beg most respectfully to VX oiler myself as one of the Candidates for the honor of representing you in the next Provincial Council. My past political life is well known to, and is 1 trust, not unfavorably judged by, the greater portion of those I now do myself the honor to address. If it be urged that the interests of a Candidate should be identical with those of the district which he seeks to represent, I can state most assuredly, that such, in every respect, is my posi- , tion. On public matters, which cannot well be discussed within the limits of an advertisement, I may briefly state my views. First. — That I will not vote for any gentleman as Superintendent unless he first distinctly promises to be guided strictly by the decision of the 1 majority of his Executive in matters of public Government. Should Mr. Holmes be proposed to this office, I should certainly give that gentle--1 man the preference, as he is a business man, a term \ which you all appreciate, and possesses not only . a large interest in this Province, but also the confidence of a large number at home, who knowing of his election to the post of Superintendent, would have much greater confidence, and would be much more likely to invest their capital in this Province than there is any probability in at present. The new Land Act is a cruel wrong, as it at present stands, and I believe that every effort should be made to set aside so baneful and unjust a measure. The subject of roads, in my opinion, is a difficult one, and requires much care and forethought. Our northern road and railway provide pretty well for that outlet. The east road requires tho greater amount of money, when such shall be available. Side and cross country roads require new and special legislation. I prefer, gentlemen, to state my views to you publicly at any -meeting called 'for the purpose of : . hearing the views and intentions of various Candidates, to condensing t.-.ose ideas within advertisement limits, and shall feel glad to come forward whenever bo desired, and give my sentiments fveoly. I am, (Jeritlemon, . I ; Your- obedient servant, 63-64 KATH. CHALMBB3. i
