INVEROARGILL ELECTION.
(TO THE EDITOR OV THE SOUTHLAND TIME 3.) Sir, — As many have asked me on the point, I beg, through the medium of your columns, to intimate to my constituents that at present I have no intention of offering myself for re-election as member of the Provincial Council. However, as there is some little time between this and the nomination day, if circumstances demand and my friends should desire it, I will come forward as a candidate, feeling sure that the hearty support I have hitherto had would not fail me — even in the eleventh hour. Properly speaking, I should hat c met my constituents before our long connection ceased, for which I have to apologise, but at this late hour such would be unusual, if not unnecessary ; but as a parting word perhaps I may be excused if I tender my advice that you should steadily keep in view the person you would like to fill the office of Superintendent. Don't be led away by such stuff as that our Provincial institutions are mere corporations, &c., &c., the inference being that in such case it is of no great moment who should occupy that position ; but we must deal with them as we find them, and from the experience of the past, on the passing of the present Land Bill Act, the Escort, and many other questions I could name equally affecting the vital interests of the Province, it would be utter folly to place the present" Superintendent in a position to play the same fatal game over again. Of the two candidates now partially before the Province, in my opinion Mi 1 . Holmes is immeasurably the superior, as being, perhaps, one of the clearest headed and most energetic business men in the Colony. — I am, Sir, your most obedient servant, W. H. CALDER.
