VICTORIA.
<» By the City of Hobart we are in receipt of our Victorian files to the 24th. The news is not of a very interesting character. On the 20th August, Captain Gray, of the Great Britain, was entertained at a dejeuner at St. George's Hall by a about 100 ladies and gentlemen, who have at various times sailed with him. Roberts, the champion billiard player, has been twice beaten at Ballaarat. He gave his successful antagonist, Mr. Norcliffe, 500 points in a 1000. A man, called Matthew Corbett, intentionally mutilated himself- at Ballaarat, by cutting off his left arm with an axe. He has since died at the Hospital. The Ovens and AMAitrray Advertiser report the discovery of two more diamonds in a claim on the Woolshed. One of them is stated to be worth, in its rough state, £8. Five diamonds had been previously found in the same claim. The following are the correct entries for the young horses engaged in the Melbourne Derby and Oaks to be run in November, 1864: — THE DERBY. It is said that some of the Victorian friends of the late William Smith O'Brien are about to raise a subscription for the purpose of erecting a memorial to him in Ireland. A penny Bavings' bank is to be established in Eichmond. The preliminary meeting was not very well attended. A volunteer ball was given at the Exhibition Building on the night of the 23rd August. Upwards of a thousand were present, including Sir Charles Darling, Lady Darling, and Miss Darling. The Argus says that Signor Castelli has been engaged by Mr. Hoskins, for the Haymarket Theatre. He was to make his first appearance on the 29th ultimo. Signor Castelli is a tenor of great ability, and bas earned a considerable reputation in the Parisian musical world. The Argus has the following mining news :— A very rich vein of stone has been struck at a depth of 120 feet on the North Nuggetty lleef, at Tarrengower, the specimens from which are said to be better than any ever taken out of this reef, even in its best days. The extent of the vein is not supposed to be very great ; but this has yet to be ascertained. A lot of fifty tons from the Grand Junction claim, on Manton's Gully reef, was lately crushed with a yield of 1650z5. ; and a lot of stone from another claim on this reef averaged four ounces to the ton. Wilson's Reef, is also said to be yielding some richer stone again. Another new reef, said to be as rich as any near the Crooked River, has been discovered at the Good Luck Creek, and named the Mountaineer. A very rich-looking vein has also been found in the prospector's claim on the Union Reef, at a depth of two feet from the surface. The severity of the weather has prevented much prospecting in this direction of late, but with the melting of the snow there will be a renewed search for the many rich reefs with which the mountains are believed to be studded.
