SHIPPING SUMMARY.
The shipping trade for the month has been for the most part dull, and we have to record very few arrivals from ports other than coastwise. Two of these were from Melbourne, the Union and Leonidas. The former of these brought a large miscellaneous cargo, with considerable consignments of flour, fruits, and kerosene. The Leonidas brought a locomotive engine for our northern fine of railway, and a general cargo. The Pat the Rover, from Adekide, fetched a large cargo of flour, and other goods ; while the Dart, from Launceston, brought flour, fruits, and general goods. These inward bound vessels continually experience the greatest difficulty in making into port since the departure of the steam-tug Aphrasia, and several of them have been compelled to beat about outside the bar for weeks era an entrance could be effected. The westerly winds greatly prevail at this point, which, in a great measure, grestly increases the difficulty. Our communication with the Northern Ports of New Zealand has been well maintained throughout the month. The fine steamer, William Miskin, has been trading regularly betwixt Invercargill and Dunedin, in place of the Titania, which is a present being over-hauled at that port. On the Ist proximo, we understand, she will resume her old line of trade, while it appears the William Miskin will trade between the Molyneux and Dunedin. At Bluff Harbor a large quantity of railway plant has been discharged during the month, ex the Charlotte Jane and Silesia, from London. The Electric, ship, Captain Purss, sailed for Sydney, in ballast, on the 12th inst. Previous to her departure, Captain Purss was entertained by a few friends to a farewell dinner, which passed off most pleasantly. The Tonnage Returns for the Port of Invercargill for the month are smaller than usual. From foreign ports we find a tonnage of 594 for four vessels. Inwards coastwise, twenty-six coasting traders show a tonnage of 870 j and outwards coastwise, twenty-four vessels exhibit a tonnage of 739. These coastal traders are principally connected with the porti of Dunedin, Bluff, Riverton, and Stewart's Island. - » ■ "
