EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT APPEALS.
TO THE EDITOB OE THE SOUTHLAND TIMES. Sra — I havo often wondered why your pen, which is by no means backward in exposing grievances, has not been used to show the very serious injury wliich the present "Education Ordinance " i's inflicting on a large section of the community. I am sure that if it continues in force another year, very many will have to remove to other" settlements, where a more just legislation obtains. I will not say how much I am supposed to pay under this Ordinance, but it is something which is really oppressive ;/ nay, more, it is ruinous. Not oniy is the Act itself unjust in principle, but those fco whom its working is entrusted appear inclined to gire as much trouble as possible. Witness the advertisement calling a meeting of the School Committee to take into considei ation the objections of those who considered themselves unfairly assessed. Tlie convener of that meeting is, in my opinion, liable to various actions for damages, f&r causing persons to leave their occupations only to hear on tlieir arrival that a gross blunder had been committed, the notice required by the Act not having been given. — Yours, &c., fa SETTLER. «
