THE TOWN BOARD.

(to the editor of the southland times). Sir. — My attention has just been called to a most impertinent letter in the Daily News_ of this this date, signed " Caustic," quite in keeping with the style usually adopted by those " bright particular stars" whoso rabid effusions grace the your contemporary. A number of respectable citizens are taken to taßk unmercifully for having at one time or other been connected with the Town Board. I feel quite convinced, from my knowledge of the members of the Board ot era series of years, that they have generally been most respectable citizens, and have been engaged in a most thankless task. There can be no doubt the Ordinance does not warrant the special rate 9to be levied at so much per foot, and doubtless had such a Solon as " Caustic, " with his spectacles, been a member, he would have enlightened them, and been a very efficient man. I quite agree with '* Caustic " that the ratepayers have shown a remarkable amount of apathy anent Town Board elections j but at the samo time that does not warrant "Caustic," or "any other man, " publishing false statements, as to my certain knowledge Mr. Reynolds was not present at the last Town Board election, and Mr. Smith neither proposed, nor seconded any nommination ; and further, that one of the newly-elected members, as "Caustic" well knows, did take the trouble of attending the last meeting, which lapsed through the want of a quorum. I beg to remain, Sir, PLAIN SAILING. Invercargill, Bth July, 1864.
