■» Southland Time 9 Office, Friday Evening. We have to report very little business at the Custom House for the past two days. Yesterday, the amount collected was somewhat as usual, but to-day tho receipts vrere lower than ever they have been known to be for a very long time, as will bo 6een from the following : — Yesterday, £93 2s. Yd. ; to-day, £7 83. 4d. ; in all £100 10s. lid. The following are the articles onwhich tho duties were paid, viz. : —
Business generally continues very dull, but tho absence of additional failures, and the confidence which is being imparted from the early resumption of the railway works, and the consequent improvement in trade, combine to place our markets altogether on a more satisfactory footing. It is evident that our merchants are now trading with greater caution than was the case some time ago, au:2 fcliis alone induces a healthier tone, which it is anticipated will henceforth continue to improve. ■ The prices ruling may be quoted as follows : — Flovu, £40 per ton. Potatoes, £9 to £10. Oatmeal (Scotch), 253. per cwt. Bacon and Hams, Is. Id. to Is. 2£dBtTTTEB, D.R.C., lid. to Is. 2|d. ; Tasmanian and Victorian, Is. 3d. to Is. sd. CnEESE, Is. Id. to Is. 3d. Rice, 30s. per cwt. Sugab. — Middling yellow, £16 por ton ; white crystals, £56 per ton. Bba>'DY, MarteU's, in bulk ; 11s. 6d. in bond. Gekeva, 14-3. per case. Whisky, bulk, ss. per gallon ; case, 12s. 6d. Rc.\r, 25 0.p., 4s. 6d. Ale, Joule's stone, new brew, £9 10s. to £10 ; Jeffrey's, £9. Bottled Ales and Porter, best brands, 10s. 6d. in bond.
