BURMAH.
(Uroin the Calcutta Englishman, Jan. 5.) We are in receipt of Rangoon and Moulmein papers to the 25th ult., from 'which Aye see that several acts of daeoity have been committed, and that in one case a gang of about fifty men made an attack upon a police guard, with the ulterior object* of plundering a whole Aillage. The police, to the number of thirteen, headed by an Inspector, turned out and fired into the gang, and a " smart action " took place, Avhich lasted for nearly "an hour, Avhen the assailants thought it prudent to beat a hasty retreat. In this encounter several dacoits Avere killed and , wounded. The office of the Moulmein Advertiser Avas visited by a party of these gentry Avho managed to carry off a sum of money. The inhabitants are loud in their call for some prompt means of putting a stop to these plunderings; and as it appears that a great number of foresters employed in the timber trade are under the necessity, in the prosecution of their business, of proceeding every season to the jungle, carrying large sums of money, the dacoits are said to be lying in A\ r ait for such tempting baits. A correspondence has lately been carried on betAveen the local goA'ernment and the mercantile community, on the advisability of establishing a line of telegraph between Moulmein and Amherst ; and it is understood that the Grovernment are willing to' recommend the laying oifcit doAvn, proA r ided that the merchants guarantee the Avorking costs of the line. Of the rebellion in the Shan States nothing of a reliable character is given ; but it is reported that the King of Ava's brother, Meendat Meen, the Minister of War, is marching an army against the rebels ; and it is asserted, on the other hand, that the Shan chiefs have applied to the Chief Commissioner for protection.
