Mr.EbO-ERS moved— -"That, in the opinion of this House, a complete system of retrenchment arid economy is absolutely essential to the security, of 'public oreditj, that the experience' of past years has Bhown the utter nseless'ness of expenditure Upon roads during the -winter, and that therefore no monies, further * than the sunt sufficient for maintaining: those portions of roads which are worthy of being so maintained, shall he expended;, that, the staff; of .all such departments as may? be safely reduced, shall be so reduced ; ■.and the strictest economy observed throughout the Arhble departments.'' .The hon. gentleman dwelt at considerable length on the necessity of considerable reductions being made in the number.; of, officials employed in the various public departments, but was not in favor of reduction in the salaries of those remaining, and concluded,' hy pointing out the inutility of expending further sums of money in the formation of roads during winter,- -except in keeping 7 in repair those roads which had already heen formed. A Message, containing the correspondence, between -the; .Deputy-Superintendent and Messrs Gillies and Street, of Dunedin, AA-as received from His Honor the Superintendent, and rbad by the Clerk. On the motion of Mr. Stuart, the time for the select committee bringing up their report oh; the Southland Representation Bill, AA-as extended to Monday. The House thei adjourned till evening.
