' The meii in*; qiiestiori confined their attention to iworHng a false bottom, found at ; ten -or fifteen feet, below the, surface, from J which they obtain, by sluicing, fan* average j wages. In one or two instances the ground pays remarkably well' a claim adjoining .that. ;of the Hit-Or-Miss company having: •£lO per man last week., i Y The JBj.t-or-Mis*S: - company and Hogan' s party, and;' the holders of adjoining claims .'mtenderecting.,at"6nb.e'.-a''*' powerful waterwheel, to enable them to again give the flat a fair ".trial, and, if -possible, -reach ■the ■bottom' Y The *'; success of then* will materially improve ihe prospects of ;tho Arrow Township, and give employment ifo many who even now, at the height of the mining season, complain that there* is little or nothing to do. ; Y' Afrthe Cardrona the population is steadily increasing; thera now. being about 200 men on Butcher's .Flat,-; although -nothing further " has: been discovered, sufficient .to warrant a rush to tliat iocality. .One small lead of gold' has been' struck, and tliere is reason' to suppose that it branches ofl? iu ~ two or-three directions , through the flat •; ?butYthat > supposition has yet to be verified, and probably; at the expense of. .considerable labor. .The gold at present "found is obtained fem off in/ false bottom of red gravel, at a depth, varying^ from fire to fif teen feet. . Y- '*■: Mining affairs above th6 Falls, on tlie : Arrow River, are progressing' favorably, the various claimhoiders having jgotYOarbugh; a considerable amouut of work of late ; "and the problem will now sodn bovfiolved as to, wh, e thoi'.;tlic locality will return aiiy remuneration fbr r the labor already expended on it of not. The Perseverance Company have simk -their;- first paddock to the depth of: fifteen feet,' aud expect to reach the bottom •within anothor *five feet ; if they Succeed in doing so, a» decided impetus will bc^vS2~£o further mining speculations in that directibnf^tkgh*; diiim^^ being v on the nearest available beach above the "FailS, '**" all wordings higher up the river will,, in all probability, prove shallower, and tterefere be more easily worked--»*, Much of the available ground is, already occupied, and many parties only wait the issue of the ' Perseverance Coni- " pany's trial paddock to take up claims also. This company'x christened their wheel a few days ago, naming it " Mademoiselle Clemenee . Isore," aud celebrated; the occasion as a fete day, a considerable number of then* friends and neighbors on the river rolling up to join in the jollification. ' . Y■"
