TOWN BOAUD ELECTION.

The nomination of four members to serve on the Town Board, in room of Messrs Blacklock, Lang, Mueller, and T. M. Clark resigned, took place on Saturday. After some delay caused by hunting for the key of the School- room, access to the building was gained by nine electors ; and theßetun - ing Officer, who briefly stated the object of the meeting, informed those pressnt who were eligible for electing or election, and invited the company to nominate candidates. Mr Scamlret-t proposed Mr Henry Jaggers, seconded by Mr Broad. Dr Berndt proposed Mr Isaac Broad, seconde 1 by Mr Garth waite. Mr Broad declined to accept office. Mr Garthwaite proposed Mr C. H, Reynolds, seconded by Dr Berndt. Mr Jaggers proposed Mr J. T. Downes, seconded by Mr D. Smith. Mr Garthwaite proposed Mr H. B. Monkman, seconded by Mr Scandrett. Mr M'lvor proposed Mr J. Grieve, seconded by Mr Broad. Mr M'lvor proposed Dr Berndt. The opinion being general that the gentleman who had just left the meeting) would not (ake office, there was no seconder. Mr Garthwaite proposed Mr H. A. Giller. On reference to the Clerk of. the ' Board, he was declared ineligible, as his late resignation had not yet been gazetted. Mr M'lvor thought they should have a representative from the other newspaper, and proposed Mr George Smallfield, seconded by Mr Grieve. A call to "order" silenced some jocular remarks Wiiieh followed, and Mr M'lvor proposed Mr Maning, of Messrs Maning and Whitton. Seconded by Mr Grieve. Mr Jaggers wanted to know what sort of man the last mover had been nominating. Mr M'lver said every one knew Mr Mania 1 ;. Mr Jaggers. " No, they did'nt. You ought to get up and tell the electors what you know of him." (Cries of " Yes, yes.") Mr M'lvor stated in general terms that Mr Maning was as good a man as they could get for the Board. Mr Grieve proposed Mr A. T. Claik. Seconded by Mr M'lvor. The Returning Officer here intimated that he had eight names on the list, and suggested that the meeting should make up the dozen. f Mr Broad moved that the Returning Officer " shout" for the electors present. The Returning Officer called Mr Broad to order. ' There was then a pause for a few seconds, till .Mr, Jaggers, while looking at his watch, informed the officer that he (Mr Jaggeis) " was up." A show of hands was then taken with the following result. Jaggers, 6} Reynolds, 5j ' Downes, 6 ; Monkman, 4 ; Grieve, 4 ; Smallfield, 2 ; Maning, 2 ; and Clark, 3. The Clerk to the Board stated that Mr Monkman was not eligible, he having at present a contract under the Board. On reference to the Ordinance, it was found that the gentleman might be elected, but if he accepted office, he was liable to be fined in L2O. Mr Walker wished to know if that law. had been acted upon. He knew of several who j pretended to serve the public, and enriched i themselves with contracts of the Beard ' I The Officer informed him that the Ordinance had baen only recently passed. Mr Walker repeating his assertion, Messr3 M'lvor, Garthwaite, and others called "names' 1 and "cases," but with the declaration that the querists knew 'them as well as hej Air Walker left the room. . , C « With the consent of mover and seconder, Mr Monkman's name was. withdrawn from the list, and ho poll being demanded for the other three nominated, the Returning; Officer; declared Messrs 'jaggers, Downes, Reynolds, j and Grieve, duly elected members of the; Town Board. This closed the proceedings. .
