j , We have little to add to our last report. Busi- ! ness continues dull ; but it is expected to revive in a few days, if the weather holds fair. The Dunstan storekeepers, with the recent finds of gold, will be placed in funds to cover liabilities ; and a reaction in business will ensue. Private advices record large finds of gold, and an average i return to the majority of diggers holding claims up the river ; and it is to be fairly presumed that ; the next escort will be an important one. It is not advisable that large parcels of goods should be indiscriminately thrust upon this market ; and, with reference to our recent remarks about butter, we have now fo record a heavy shipment of candles, ex Gothenburg ; far too largo a parcel to come to one party, whilst merchants are importing on private account. A system of trading of this character, with a colony containing only a limited population, ia not calculated to produce any good ; indeed, quite the reverse ; and it is to be sincerely hoped Melbourne merchants will not create a margin of loss to themselves by overstocking our market. The vacant space between the Commercial Hotel has been selected for a branch of the Bank of Australasia ; hence, with the erection going forward for Messrs Butterworth Brothers, and other buildings in progross, High-street will rival any other in this city. • The last advices by the Gothenburg show an improvement in general transactions, and some articles had experienced an enhanced value.— Daily Times, Msty &
