A considerable number of the building sites in the Lowther Arcade have already been leased, so that, as a lunatic friend Of ours rem irked, the least we ma_j expect to see before long is a sight of building going ou in that quarter. In all probability the whole of the lots will be taken up rery shortly.
On Wednesday night the neighborhood of the Golden Fleece was enlivened "by a very pretty '« shindy," the yells of the cotrfbatants creating quite a sensation for a considerable area round the scene of action. The exertions of the contractor, together "with the considerable quantity of rain that has recently fallen, is rapidly converting Tay -street into a "slough of despond." Would it not have been wiser to have allowed the old road to do duty through the winter, and waited till returning spring gave a promis" of a continuance of fine weather before bringing the street to its proper level. ? The horse market appears to be overrun ju«t at present with any number of "weeds.'' Very few really good saddle horses are to be obtained in town. Undeterred by a succession of miseTably wet nights, Miss Harriet Gordon has continued playing to good houses. As usual? this lady's performances have given great satisfaction to those who were hardy enough to undertake the navigation of the approaches to the Mechanics' Institute. We hope that before Miss Gordon leaves the Province the fates will be more propitious, and that bumper hnusos may reward Her exertions in catering for the public taste. The Maryborough and Dunolly Advertiser holds out hopes to its readers of the discovery of a new goldfield in the vicinity of Oarisbrook. We extract the following paragraph from our contemporary's columns.-— "There is every probability of a now and good rush turning out on ihe ground mentioned in Monday's paper, between Gibraltar and Carisbrook. The ground is situated about five miles from Maryborough, one mile from M'Callum's C eek, and three from Carisbr.ODk. B.mnUfcor and party are, we believe, the prospectors, and have marked out a prospecting claim. The ground is entirely new, and has a laigc extent, and the sinking i< a brut ninotv feet, on to cement, which is s lid to be likely to co two to three ounces to the ton. Yesterday there were about five huri'livd people on the groxi«d, and very nviny claims have been marked out, five of wire!;, m the immediate vicinity of the prospec;iu£r <-laim, will he worked day and night nntil the bottom is struck. If this turns out as it is at all likely to do, a new field of mining enterprise will pnrich our neighborhood, but we would beg to caution miners to wait until the prospect is made clear before leaving ground payable to them. We have every reliance in our information, but the land may be pafchy, and, if otherwise, we shall only be toi happy to make known the full particulars." At the usual weekly meeting of the Town Board held yesterday afternoon, it was agreed to pay the interest on two suras of money borrowed from government. An application from Messrs Cairtpr, Blacklock. and Co., for permission to erect entrance steps to their premises In Tny-strcet was acceded to. With a view to prevent future misunderstanding with the Land Office, the solicitor of the ftoard was requested to take the op : ni'-;n of the most eminent barristers in the colony a 5 to the right of the Board in managing the town reserves. Without prejudice to this light it was agreed to fill up the reserves from which gravel might be taken Some other business of no public importance was tifinsnctcd, and several notices of motion having hi en given the Board adjourned.
