I 1 -_ i j Yesterday evening. Mr. Bart? or, of Invercargill Police Court i.etoriety, having powerfully refreshed himself in a public-house, proceeded to the office of a well-known journal in this town, and assaulted the Editor ■with a cudgel. The offence was premeditated, and the alleged cause of quarrel was the wording of a report of some proceedings I before the Ilosidcnt Magistrate, a few days j since. The stick having been liruken by ■ some frentlem.cn who were present, Mr. | Barker went away and returned soon afU'i- | wards with another one larger than the first. He was eventually taken into custody, and locked up for the night. As the affair will I shortly be brought before the notice of the public, under the fostering care of the legal profession, we will at present say nothing further on the subject, merely stating that I judging from J lie weapon used on the occasion, Mr. liatkcr is a first-class judge of a " shillelah." A communication of a somewhat interesting character was made to us yesterday. We believe that very shortly an agency in connection with this Province will be formed in Melbourne by private entkupiuse. The great want of this has been long felt, and there is little doubt but that it will, if properly carried out, prove a success. The Town Board are laboring under a severe pressure of business just now ; at least it would seem so if one may judge from the time occupied at its sittings. On "Wednesday it sat for exactly rive hours, and a reference to our report will show the amount of work done in that time. Even live hours, though, was too short, several items being left over for consideration at an adjourned meeting which was held last night. The most sensible thing done was accepting an estimate to form and gravel Tay-strcet, at a cost of £3445 Ms Gd. At a meeting of the Southland Jockey Club, held on "Wednesday night, the following entries were made:— Maiilen l-"lato : Mr Wallace's b h Cavour, Mr Cuffs bk g Whyower, Mr Cameron's c h Isaac, Mr Procter's b m Natty, Mr J. Clerke's bk m Wandering Gipsy, Mr Proctor's b h Kangaroo. The Southland Cup : Mr Procter's b h Jack, Mr Julius' b g Kauri Gum, Mr Julius' g h Billy, Mr McKenzie's g g Sailor. Ladies' Purse : Mr Cuff's bl g Whyover, Mr Julius' br g Bob Apples, Mr Procter's b h Kangaroo, Mr Hamilton's bk g Lucifer, Invcrcargill Plate : 1 Mr Proctor's b h Jack. Mr Julius" b s Kauri

Gum, Mr McKenzie's b g Sailor. Publi£fins' Purse : Mr ■Tnlins' br gliob Arm^o, Mr itulius' b g Kauri Gum. Hurdle Knee: Mr Cuff's bk g Whynver, Mr Came on's c h T=:mr, Mr .Tnlius' bk p "Rob Apple--, Mr Proctor's b b Cornet, Mr Frisian's b h Pi. lnk. P.y the ■ilinvc it will be scon that we may expert snnie goo! spoil if the weather is only favorable. Considerable trouble has been taken to brinff the course into better order than it has previously lioen, and from wli:it we erui learn t ho arrangements altogether will prove saMsfactorv to all parties. Mr Cameron, of the Albion Hotel, bas the Ovand Stand ; Mi Hoskins, of the Criterion Restaurant, has the next booth ; and Mr Tlairifon, of Tay-street, has one fifty yards from the latter. Mr Macdonnli 1 , 1T. 1?. A., a gentleman who has, since his arrival a few months ago, succeeded in gaining the goodwill of all who have had the pleasure of his acquaintance, being about to -leave Southland for a short time, it was determine 1 by the leading men of the town to adopt the old English fashion and give him a dinner. The spread took place at the Prince of Wales Hotel, and the spirited proprietor of that establishment acquitted himself very well of the responsibility. About forty sat down to table, and justice having been done to the more solid part of the entertainment, and the usual toasts having been disposed of, the "health of the guest of the evening"' was drunk with musical honors. The party did not separate till an early hour on Thursday morning. An inquest was held by the coroner yesterday on the body of VJichard Ttamsden, who died suddenly on board the barque F.uealyptus, at an early hour on "Wednesday morning. It appeared, from the medical tes(imony that death was attributable to the bursting of a blood vessel, caused by ossification of the beait. The jury returned a verdict accordingly. The deceased was a seafaring man and was about proceeding to ITobait Town, where his wife resides. At a meeting of the Committee of the Lancushite Relief Fund, held on Wednesday night, for tbc purpose of considering the most advisable means for forwarding to I England the amount raised, six persons were I present, including the Secretary. It was moved by Mr. Small Held, and seconded by Mr. Lon^ley — "That the amount now in the I hands of the Treasurer be forthwith remitted i b\ bank draft to the order of the Mayor of | Manchester, to be appropriated as he may deem best, in relieving the sufferings of the distressed operatives throughout Lancashire.'* j Lanca>hire will not benefit much, if all other communities are as apathetic as ours. ! At a special meeting of the Southland Land Association, held on Monday night, Mr. Monkman, who had tendered his resignation, as Secretary, was induced to withdraw it. Xo provision was made in the rules for rent of ollice, and Mr. Monkman feeling this j item a hardship, resigned, but on the meet- ' ing offering £'2~> increase in salary it was accepted, and t c resignation withdrawn. We believe a " socia 1 meeting 1 ' of Congregationalisms and their friends was held in the | school-room on Tuesday evening ; but, as the promoters of it appear to be ignorant of the usual courtesy due to the Press on such j occasions, an opportunity of attending was not afforded us. We arc, therefore, unable to give a report of the proceedings. From Lake Wakatip, we hear of two boats bein^ capsized there one dav last week. One of the boats belongs to Messrs. Glynn & Co , and the men in it were all sot out with safety ; but it is reported those in the other craft were not so fortunate, but no particulars have reached town. Yesterday was the day appointed for hearing " reasons why" from any one objecting to his name being on the Jury list. The Resident Magistrate and Mr. M'Culloch were in attendance, but the duty was very light, the inhabitants evidently being careless on ' the subject, or rather desirous of serving their country in the jury-box. Some h.ilf-:i-dozen objections were heard, and Ix-inir considered reasonable, the respective names were stre.ck off the roll. Advance Invercargill ! A boat-building house has been put up on the Piini Creek, beside Clyde-sheet Bridge, and it is pleasing to observe that the koel of a tolerably-sized craft has been hid. Amongst the many buildings recently finished in town, we notice with pleasure that Mr. White's new store, opposite tbc Prince of Wales, puts in a very good appearance, and that that gentleman has already commenced operations in a very spirited manner.
