Owing to a very stupid mistake on the part of some one in our office, a letter signed "A Lover of Truth, but a Hater of Iniquity,' made its appearance in our last impression. We will only remark that we totally disagree with, the writer, and are sorry that it was inserted . The Southland Government Escort starts to-day for the Lake. It is about time, a s 21,000 oz9. are waiting for transmission to Dunedin, and, probably, if not too late, this escort will get a fair proportion of it. Who has not sighed, during the hot days we arc occasionally called on to suffer, for a draught of good mild ale? The water at such times is voted tepid, temperance liquor tasteless or provocative of thirst, and" nobblers' 1 of anything stronger only add fuel to the flame ; but cool, sparkling, home-brewed, ■would be just the right article at the right moment. Few, however, are able or willing to give half-a-crown for a drink of the welcome beverage, and, consequently, the town hitherto might, to all intents and purposes' have not had a drop within its borders. Thanks, though, to the enterprise of Mr Gunn, the days of high-priced ale are at a n end, that gentleman being now piepared to supply any quantity from the Murihik 1 Brewery. The gentleman deserves encou. ragement, and it is to be hoped he will meet with it. His liquor will be poor indeed, if it is not superior to the vile compounds so often vended as brandy, rum, or old torn. We are very happy to state that MessrsCobb & Co., have landed at the Bluff, ex Ocean Bride, foity-eight horses and a number of coaches. Thiee horses were lost on the passage. The gentleman in charge will probably drive a four-horse coach to Invereargill on Wednesday. A feu' days more and this enterprising firm will commence running coaches between here and the Mautaura, meeting Cole. Hoyte and Co.'s coaches from Dunedin. The Invercargill correspondent of the Otago Daily Times says : — "Our Town Board has lately been distinguishing itself; each memoer showing a praiseworthy desire to outvie his neighbor in talking, and as the mania seizes each at the same moment the effect is interesting and instructive ; th« astonished and bewildered clerk's minutes reading somewhat as follows: — 'The Chief Surveyor be requested to' — 'dig a ditch twenty feet deep below the level of — 'His Honor the Superintendent, and that he be made aware that' — 'the members of the Town Board are' — 'perfect flats' — this is occasionally varied with a little pen-onal seasoning, such as, 'I beg to state the member on my right is a ' — 'you're another,' &c. , so the work in the town progresses merrily. When everything else fails, the Board abuses the Government, which is quite the correct thing." Captain Milne, of the schooner Star, reports the total destruction by fire of the dwelling house attached to Messrs. Brunton and Cooper's s<eam saw mills, Waikawa. The strong winds there blowing would speedily aid the flames in demolishing a house, but the extent of the damage, or how the fire originated we as yet are in ignorance of. Full particulars may be expected shortly. By the Juno, Captain Ross, who anchored here on Sunday, we have later advices from Hobart Town. The Juno made the run from land to land in five days, including a?detention under Stuart's Island, where she was compelled to take shelter on Saturday, from the heavy westerly winds then blowing. While waiting for a pilot, the following dialogue took place between Captain Ross and the skipper'of a strange craft, noticed some time previously dodging about, and then following in the wake of the Juno. Stranger — ' Where from ? ' Captain Ross — ' Hobart Town.' Stranger — 'Where bound?' Capt. B oss — 'Invercargill,' ' Where from ? ' Stranger — ' Melbourne.' Captain Ross — ' If you had gone a mile further on the course I saw you, you would have been on the rocks. Where to ? ' Stranger — ' The Bluff, can you tell me the way? ' Captain Koss did so, and the stranger which proved to be the Ocean Bride, proceeded toward her destination, which she reached in safety. We are requested to call public 'attention to the fact that the time f^r placing names on the electoral roll expires on the 3lst of March, ensuing ; those who have not availed themselves of the opportunity before that time, will be debarred from voting for another year.

The Hobprt Town Mercury of January 28th says there were no less than nine vessels on the berth for Invercargill and Dunedin. The Bluff is to Have the services of a Resident Magistrate, Johnston Watt, Esq., having^ we understand, been appointed to the honorable post. The gentleman is well qualified to fill the office, but we hope he will find the appointment quite a sinecure for many a long day to come. During the race week the good people of Invercargill will have seme chance of a little rational amusement. Mr White, the pianist accompanied by several vocalists, will, we believe, pay ua"-* visit, and no doubt will be well patronised.
