The Invercargill Times. TUESDAY, JANUARY 13, 1863.

We said in our hearts there was no Colonist; the idea was that it was defunct, numbered amonpst the things of the past — sold in fact, for the benefit of the underwriters. Once more we were wrong. That journal is not dead, it is only "incorporated. 1 ' Possessed of a slight acquaintance with the English language, we have often puzzled our brains as to the meaning of the word " incorporation " in the newspaper sense of the term. We admit that the Colonist existed — nay, more, everybody knows that atone timn it liveil, though not for some months past. But we know nothing of the antecedents of the Daily Telegraph. When on the prairies of America, a strange bufl'alo, however willing he may be to conduct himself in a proper manner, joins a herd with which he has had no previous acquaintance, in all probability they will not reco'/nise him, and his hours are numbered. What, then, would be his chance if he made use of his horns and hoofs, and asked for a pitched battle with those into whose ranks he wished to insinuate himself. Let the Daily 7 eh-graph, on this occasion, represent the strange beast, and the remainder of the New Zealand press the rest of the herd. How does the stranger conduct himself? His issue of "Saturday, January 3rd, 1863,' gives the answer. Much has been said about American papers, but if our readers will take the trouble to read the " Daily Telegraph, with which is incorporated the Colonist" they will find that there is no occasiou for straying so far from home to find a very fair amount of conceit. " The public Press is a recognised estate of the realm," — that is the truism, we can call it by no more fitting narae,\vithwhich the Telegraph favors its readers. That is the proposition which the leader puts forth in all its glory, and backs by about the most absurd attempt at argument it has been our lot to witness for some considerable term of years. After expatiating in a remarkable manner on the glories of the New Zealand Press generally, our friend says that it would be most improper for him to dilate upon what the Colunist v iva,s. r " Most improper," echo says, when the present (i incorporated state of the establishment is taken into consideration. At one j time we had talent, now we Lave Buncombe : little more than a year ago we read in the Colonist, sense — now, we search in vain for an original piece of " anything," in the very widely distributed sheets of the latter-day mixed up jjurnal of Dunedin. Shall we pardon this writer when he attempts to pass an eu'ogium on the Otago Colonist, or shall we lay wait for him, till, in the third column of his extended verbosity, he tries to extinguish the Invercargtlt. Times? Or. again, shall wo meet him half-way, as he sounds his much mistake j penny trumpet of triumph as he charges the Otago Daily. Enough ! — the paper he prints on is good, but gritty ; the arguments he uses have neither of those qualifications ; and, above all, the larger part of the information of the '' Daily Telegraph, with which is incorporated the Colonist," is drawn from sources which it has not the good manners to acknowledge. Happy as we always were to hear a good argument, happy as we always shall be to take part in one, we confess a dislike to the paper which sends a moiety of us to Australia as its own "summary," and reserves the other half for dissection by a novice in bis profession.
