SOUTHLAND JOCKEY CLUB.
A meeting of this Club was held at the Royal Hotel on Tuesday last, and as was shown by the interest taken in the proceedings, and the influential character of the gentlemen who were present, the ensuing season promises to bear more than favourable comparison with similar events of the kind in New Zealand. Representatives from atl the principal localities in Southland were present, and subscriptions to a considerable amount have been already collected. An undertaking of this kind deserves the hearty support of the public, and it is to be hoped that this movement will meet with the encouragement which it deserves. Mr. J. O. Hughes being called to the chair, the various office-bearers were appointed, and a committee formed to inspect the race-course and make the necessary improvements requisite for the approaching races, which will be run under the rules of the Nelson Jockey Club. Subscription lists will be forwarded to and the Bluff, as also to the various banks, and placed in the hands of the stewards, who will issue programmes of the rac«s. We append a list of the office-bearers : — Stewards — Messrs. W. Hill, F. Hamilton, H. Homer, «J. G. Hughes, D. M'Kellar, R. Swale, G. M. Procter, and H. Hirst. Judge— Mr. W. Hately. Clerk of the Course — Mr. M'lntosh. Starter— Mr. Fielder. Secretary — Mr. Rutherford. Treasurer — Mr. Francis Hamilton.
