INVERCARGILL MARKETS.
The J. G. Ward Farmers’ Association of New Zealand, Ltd, report; — The usualy fortnightly sale was held at Gore on Tuesday. The entry of cattle was one of the largest that has been made there for for some years, as all the pens and several sheep yarded were filled. Our entry comprised nearly 400 head, including some well grown forward-conditioned bullocks, and a fair percentage of yearlings and two year olds. These were well advertised, consequently buyers turned up and enabled us to clear all our entry at satisfactory prices as follows:—43 bullocks at L 6 ss, 54 at L 4 8« 20 (small) at L 3 17s 6d, 20 at L 3 12s, 50 yearlings at L2 15s, 86 do (small) at L2 ; dairy cows at L 7 ss, L 6 2s 6d’ L 5 17s 6d, to L 5 5s ; fat bullocks at L 8 10s, LB, L 7 15s, L 7 7s 6d ; and L 7 2s 6d, and odd lots at above rates. Sheep—Only a moderate entry. These however, proved more than sufficient for requirements, and only a few sales were made buyers being now more unsettled than ever as to the value of shorn sheep. Our entry comprised 2028 shorn and woolled sheep. One line, however, did not reach owner’s idea of value. We sold 100 ewes iu the wool with lambs at foot at 14s Id, and 230 hoggets in the wool at 10s 2d, 100 small ewes with lambs at 8s lid, lot small hoggets at 6s, and odd lots of sheep at above rates. We held a stock sale at the Invercargill yards on Wednesday. This being an “ off ” sale the entry and attendance were both small, as were also the requirements .. As several of the butchers had got supplied about the show time they operated very cautiously, as did also the farmers, who have some spare grass, consequently the sale was bad and dull throughout. We sold two pens bullocks at L 9, pen at L 7 10s, pen cows at L 7 ss, pen at L 7 10s, and smaller sorts at L 6 10s. Of store cattle there were only a few pens forward, and no demand at the prices expected by owners. Sheep were also dull of sale, and only for a pen or two was U2C to 13s reached; these were of extra weight. We sold ewes and wethers at 8? to 7s 6d, and limbs at 7s 6d to 9e 3d, and good forward store wethers at 6s 6d to 7s 3d. Horse market—On Saturday we had over 70 entered in all classes, including draught and light horsesfrom Timaru, Ashburton, Dunedin, and other northern districts, and having held a special sale of horses on the previous Thursday for Mr Twentyman Hodgson, which filled up several buyers, Saturday’s sale started flat. However we succeeded in clearing a large number of the entry at fair prices. Best draughts, LlB to L 2 4; medium and damaged, LlO to Ll2 ; old leg-weary sorts, L 4 10s to L 9; good light horses (unbroken) up to Ll 5, and others at L 8 to LlO, with only limited demand. Our next sale at the Invercargill yards will be held on the 28th inst. to avoid the holidays.
