Country News

(From our own Correspondents.)

M A T A H R A.

Weather very rough of late—nor’westers all the go. Considering this, Mr McNab, our member had a very good meeting on Monday evening, a number of ladies attending in spite of the low state of the glass. Mr McNab spoke for over two hours and received a very patient hearing, with the exception of occasional interjections by a member of the audience who appeared to be in a merry humour. This enlivened what would have been a somewhat solid speech, for although Mr McNab has improved in his style, he still lacks humour. But perhaps it would be out of place in a political address. No doubt he will improve as he gains experience. At the close several questions were asked. A vote of thanks and confidence was proposed and carried, Mr Culling receiving a vote of thanks for officiating as chairman. ’ On Wednesday last the local shootista fired their first match in the competition. for Mr McNab’s trophy at the 200 yards range. Those who gained places were —T. A. Connor, Ist, 5 points; H. Cameron, 2nd, 4 points ; Jas. Galt, 3rd, 3 points ; J. S. Shanks, jun., 4th, 2 points; Wm. Nicol, sth, 1 point. The shooting was an improvement on any previous performance for the season, Mr Connor’s score of 31 being a particularly good one. I am sorry to have to record a death in our township—that of Miss Christie, who died at the residence of her uncle (Mr R. L. Begg) on Saturday morning last. Although only a short time resident in our midst, she had made a number of friends by her quiet and unassuming manner, and many are the expressions of regret at her early death.
