WINTON.
Mr R. Crabb has been here, lecturing and preaching on the evils of intemperance. He gained a number of converts at the close of one of his meetings. A well-attended meeting of the Caledonian Society took place in the Oddfellows’ Hall last Wednesday — Mr W. Keith (president) in the chair. The following judges were appointed —Quoits : Messrs J. Hamilton, Geo. Bgerton and A. Knight. Running
and Walking:—Messrs J. Campbell, A. McKay, R. Wilson, and C. D. Moore. High leap and vaulting : Messrs A, Liddell and F. Jack. Wrestling : Messrs A. Mclnerney and R. Wilson. Chopping and sawing :—Messrs D. McKenzie, R. Wilson, and W. Jack (who will also handicap). Superintendent of sports —Mr W. Keith. Starters : —Messrs M. Daly and E. R. Kidd. Timekeeper : —Mr W. Kicol. It was resolved that a number of standards be secured for the “ Sheffield ” handicap race, which is creating a, good deal of interest. Tenders were ordered to be called for the temperance booth, fruit stall, and dining room. The concert committee are working energetically to make their part of the programme a success, and taken as a whole, the forthcoming sports should be equal, if not superior, to anything yet held here. In consequence, no doubt, of the weather (which is anything but decent for this time of year) the bales of wool coming to the station are not very numerous. The wife of Mr A. Mclnerney, of the Railway hotel, passed away on Wednesday. The deceased, who was highly respected, was in the prime of life. She leaves eleven children. General sympathy is felt for Mr Mclnerney in his bereavement.
