— MAT AURA NOTES.
We have, as I expected, had a real good downpour of rain, and everything is looking much the better for it—in fact, you can almost see things growing, they are coming on so fast. We are beginning to think that we have had about enough of it—human nature to growl, I suppose. We’re never satisfied, The annual soiree in connect;o a with the Gospel Temperance Society came off on Friday evening last in Mr Humphries’ Hall, and proved a thorough success. Mr Lowden (president of the Society) occupied the chair. Special mention should be made of the visitors who assisted daring the evening. These were the Misses Collie and Stewart and Mr R, Roy, all from Gore, w T ho contributed songs, each of which received a wellearned round of applause. The local performers all did well. A children’s treat was held next day to use up the superabundance of provisions that had been provided. The milk supply at our dairy factory has touched 2,000 gallons a day, and is still on the increase. The addition to the paper mills is nearing completion, but I don’t expect they will be starting work for another week at least. We miss the morning whistle at six o’clock which warns us to get ready for another day’s work. It is my painful duty to chronicle the death of the wife of Mr R. Kilpatrick, a settler in the Waimumu district, fie has a heavy burden to bear, as he has four young children (the youngest being only six weeks old) to look after. All in the district unite in giving Mr Kilpatrick their heartfelt sympathy. The Presbyterian Church is beginning to put on quite a new appearance. Nothing like a coat of paint to freshen up a building. A further improvement is to be made, namely, the erection of a new fence in front, and other improvements are to be made, namely, the erection of a new fence and sundry other alterations which will be a decided advantage, giving everything a much tidier look.
