Angling.

UORRBNT NOTES.

[By Phantom.]

[Readers are invited to contribute items of local fishing news for insertion in this column.] We have had enough rain this week to please everybody, and the country looks like a beautiful garden, with the perfume of the hawthorn and gorse, the song of the lark, the gambols of the frisky little lambs, and the smile of the farmer as he sees his stock fattening on the sweet tender grass. All look happy and thankful for the welcome r..in, and a day’s trout fishing under these circumstances is a pleasure fit for a prince. Nearly every angler in Southland took advantage of yesterday’s holiday, and made off to some favourite stream to try his luck, and many a fine fish which has withstood temptation hitherto, will find himself in hot water to-day. The Border Anglers’ Associaiion of Gore held a bare fly competition yesterday on the Waipahi, for which there were 15 entries. In the early part of the week Mr W. Russell landed three perfect beauties from the Waikiwi —two nines and a six.

Messrs Greig, Fullarton, and Hinton had grand sport on the Otamete last Saturday. They had 54 fish, weighing Sight's. The heaviest was a four pounder. [The remainder of our correspondent’s notes will appear next week. —Ed.]
