Country News

(From our own Correspondents.)

M IMIHAU.

The weather, with the exception of ;a little wind, has been very good for -the last week, and our farmers are *busy finishing grain sowing. A sudden death took place in the Bank of New Zealand, Wyndham, on Saturday evening. A Miss Frew', from Riverton, who has been in the service of Mr Fraser, the manager, for some time, took suddenly ill on Friday, and notwithstanding the prompt attendance of Dr Menzies, passed -away on Saturday evening. Mr Bramble, agent of the Colonial Bank at Wyndham, is leaving us to take charge of the branch at Gore. The Mimihau Quadrille Assembly dosed the season with a grand ball in the schoolroom last week. There was a large turn-out from all parts of the ■district, and fully 30 couples took part in the grand march. The committee deserve great credit for the excellent manner in which they had prepared ■everything for the entertainment of the visitors ; but more especially is praise due to Miss Campbell, our school-mistress, for her indefatigable exertions in helping to make *the gathering -a decided success. Excellent music was supplied by Mr Alf. Shirley, and Mr Hugh McKay made an efficient M.C. Songs were sung by Messrs Watson, Mclntosh, and Craham, and a hornpipe was executed in good style by Mr Burgoyne, all going home well pleased.
