MATAURA NOTES.

The weather has been superb of late. We had fine rain on Wednesday aflernoon and evening the onlyfault being that there was not enough of it.

In spite of the very warm weather football appears to be still to the fore, as a match was played on Wednesday afternoon between a local junior team and a team from Invercargill. Again the local boys were victorious, winning by eleven points to six points. This should finish football for this season.

The monthly meeting of the rifle club was held in Mr Cameron’s hotel on Wednesday evening. Correspondence was dealt with and other business, the chief being improvements on the rifle range and pit. When these are completed the range should ■compare favourably with any of those about. A committee was elected to draw up conditions, etc., for competition for Mr McNab’s trophy, consisting of Messrs Mitchell, T. W. MacGowan, and Shanks. The opening day was fixed for the 24th inst, at 2 p.m. sharp—sides to be chosen by the captain and lieutenant. A good muster is anticipated.

The township has quite a busy appearance in the mornings now that the dairy factory is at work again. Dong may it continue so! There is no doubt the local business people notice a difference when the factory is shut down.

A concert and dance is to be held on Tuesday first in Mr Humphries’ Hall, proceeds to go to the band fund. It is to be hoped they will have a good house. Our local anglers are having a good time of it, as the trout in the Mataura are taking very well at present, the only fault being a want of condition, but no doubt they will improve as the season advances.
