WINTON.
[From Our Own Correspondent.]
A well-attended meeting of the local branch of the 1.0.0. F., M.U., toot place last Monday, Bro. H. Taylor, N.G., in the chair. The Lodge concert and ball has been postponed until Wednesday, 3rd October. This was done in order to meet the wishes of the Invercargill talent, which, no doubt, will be a treat to listen to. The committee (an energetic one) is leaving no stone unturned to make this concert second to none held here.
The Holy Trinity Church social, which took place last Thursday, was a brilliant success, not only from a numerical but also from a financial standpoint. The ladies who had the matter in hand had their anticipations even more than realised, which they fully deserved. The annual meeting of the Caledonian Society will take place next Wednesday. It is to be hoped that members will roll up ; and as to business people who are not members, it is desirable that they should also put in an appearance this year. By putting their shoulders to the wheel they can stimulate a good cause, and promote the prosperity of the place. Mr M. Sheehan, one of Mr F. Jack’s wellknown robust bushmen, informs me that he and his mate, Mr J. Walsh, felled a red pine a few days ago in the Forest Hill bush that cut close on 5000 feet of first-class timber. This is only a sample of what is to be seen in this bush. It ranks next to the Lake Te Anau bush. It is to be hoped we have seen the last of the frosts for this year. Those of last week have' greatly checked the growth of the young grass. Orchards (especially peach and apricot blossoms) and florists’ flowers have also been affected, and it is possible that many of the plants will succumb.
