MATAURA NOTES.

[From our own Correspondent.]

The weather for the past few days has been very good, with the exception of very sharp frosts, which we could very well do without

On Wednesday the Town Board election came oft, and resulted as follows —T. Culliug, 71; J. H. Perkins, 69 ; A. Balneaves, 68 ;J. Pollock, 67; R. Allison, 55 ;H. Cameron and A" R. Brown, 50 each ; J. .Lowden, 42 ; T. Mac Go wan, 37; G. Dempster, 34; and W. R. G. Hay, 27. The first seven were declared duly elected. As I predicted, the old members are all returned with one exception —that of Mr Cameron, who takes Mr Lowden’s place. A most enjoyable and interesting draughts match took place last Friday evening between the members of the Club and non-members, the latter challenging, and as the result proved they had very good grounds for so doing. Most of the members considered they would hove very little trouble in taking the conceit out of the non-members, but judging by results the boot was on the other foot, and it was a narrow shave of being defeated, the scores being 23 wine each, with five games drawn. Should there be a return match, I would advise members to look out, otherwise they may be beaten. The return match with the Ferndale players took place in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Wednesday evening, and resulted in a win for the home team, the scores being as follows —Mataura, 14 wins; Ferndale, 10 wins, with seven games drawn. After the match the visitors were taken to Cameron’s Hotel, where a bountiful repast was provided. The customary speeches were indulged in, the meeting breaking up about 11 o’clock with a hearty vote of thanks to host and hostess Cameron for the excellent spread. A meeting is to be held on Monday evening to consider the advisableness of re-construct-ing our late hand. It is to be hoped that when started the playing members will take a little more interest in it than they did previously. A large number of them seemed to think that they had nothing further to do than attend practice, go through their parts somewhat like automatons, then return home. But this is not all. It would be well if they would remember that they can do a lot towards making the band a success by obtaining hon. members. Who but the players, I would ask, can work successfully in this direction ?
