SACRED CONCERT.

The Elies Road Primitive Methodist Church was filled to its utmost capacity on Monday evening’ last, when a very successful concert took place. A small but efficient choir was seated on the elevated platform behind the pulpit, and under the direction of Mr W. Eield, rendered several anthems during the evening in a manner that reflected credit upon themselves and their conductor. In the solo “ Come unto Hfim,” Miss Nicholas was heard to great advantage, but her second solo, “ The Lost Chord,” was scarcely so well suited to her voice. Mr Hensley gave “ Ora Pro Nobis ” with good effect, and 1 in the second part sang “The Village Blacksmith” wfith due expression. A quartette, “ The Path of Life,” by Mrs Ibbotson, Miss Spratt, and Messrs Ibbotson and C. Griffiths was well received. “ The Leper ” and “ Becalmed,” the recitations given by the Rev. W. C. Woodward, gave evidence of high elocutionary ability. Mrs Anderson sang “ Consider the Lilies ” in a very pleasing manner, and was followed by Mr Grenfell, whose vigorous rendering of “ The Toilers ” met with marked approbation from the audience. Miss Geddes’ singing of “ The Holy City ” and “ The Star of Bethlehem ” were the best items on the programme, and a strong desire was evinced to hear her again, but po encores were allowed. A pianoforte selection, “ Orazione,” by Miss Anderson was a very creditable performance, and Mr E. Service sang “ Calvary.” Miss Organ acquitted herself well in .singing “ Angels ever bright and Pair.” During the interval refreshments, provided by the ladies of the congregation, were handed around —this item promoting a pleasing sociability among the audience. The accompaniments were played by Misses Pox, Organ, Geddes, and Anders&n, and Mr E. Service. A hearty vote of thanks on the motion of the Rev. W. Woollass was accorded to all who had assisted in making the entertainment so succesful, and after the singing of the Doxology the gathering dispersed.
