MATAURA NOTES. pProra our own Correspondent.] The election of members of our local Town Board comes off on the 19th inst. There are no less than 11 candidadates in the field, and should he a close finish. “An old dog for a hard road,” as the saying is, so I think the old members should about win.
The Mataura (first) and a team from the Riversdale football clubs met in a match on the Gore F. C. grouds at Gore on Saturday last, and resulted in a win for “ our boys ” by 12 points to nil. The game from the start was all in favor of Mataura and the score should have been much larger had not the forwards kicked too hard. This appears to be a fault with them, and it is time they knew better. We experienced a rather sharp hail-storm on Tuesday afternoon, and the weather has been rather threatening since, with a nasty sold wind, and it still looks as though bad Weather were hanging round. On Wednesday evening a confcintingent of our local draughts players visited the Ferndale Club, when they succeeded in puting the home team through by 17 wins to 9 wins, with 4 game drawn* As this is the first win our players have made for some time they feel just a little bit pleased with themselves. After the match a bountiful repast was done full justice to by members of both teams, each vieing the other as to who could make the best record, as was shown by the number of plates emptied of their contents. When the supper was disposed of the usual speeches were indulged in, after which the ladies of Ferndale were accorded a hearty vote of thanks for the good things provided. The local rifle club intend starting a shooting competion at an early date for a Martini Henri rifle, donated by Mr Me Nab.
