DUNEDIN MARKETS.
The markets are thus reported on for the week ended sth September; Fat cattle—To-day’s supply at Burnside, although not large, was quite sufficient to meet trade requirements, 176 being yarded. A fair number of these were heavy-weight bullocks in prime condition, the balance ranging from medium to good. Last week’s prices for prime beef were well maintained,
but for medium quality competition was not quite so keen. Best bullocks sold at L 9 to LI2 6s ; medium, L 6 5b to L 8; inferior and light, L 4 10s to L 6; best cows, L 7 5s to L 8 15s; ordinary, L 4 t© L 6 16s. Fat sheep —An average supply was penned for to-day’s market viz., 2505 of all sorts, 350 of which were merinos. The bulk of those forward were medium-weight wethers and ewes, in good condition, with a few pens prime and heavy. Competition throughout the sale was fairly good up to last week’s rates; prime mutton, however, received most attention, and for this quality a slight advance on late quotations was established. Best crossbred wethers sold at 15s 6d to 16s 9d, one pen extra good and long woolled, 17s 6d; medium to good, 12s 6d to 14s 6d; best crossbred ewes, 13s 6d to 14s 9d ; medium to good, 10s 6d to 13s; merinos 4s 9d to 12s. Wool. —It will doubtless be satisfactory to notice that there is reason to hope that the late rise in the prices at H ome will be maintained. Press telegrams to hand report that owing to the tariff the value of domestic wool in America has already advanced con-, siderably. The Antwerp sales Avere opened on the 4th, -and close on the 14th inst. when, with other wools, 1400 bales of Australian will be offered. The usual oddments are being put through in the local market, Avhieh,as a rule, fetch very fair prices.
