MATAURA.

The football match between Matanra Ist and Waikaia, played at Mafaura, was won by the home team by 14 points to nil. Mr F. Wallis (Gore) gave every satisfaction with, the whistle, none of his decisions being called in question. Last Monday evening brought a most successful session of our mutual improvement society to a close. After a number of songs and recitationshad been given, the treasurer presented a rough balance sheet, which showed a credit of 7s 4d after all expenses are paid. Happy condition ! The usual votes of thanks were accorded the office-bearers and others who had assisted in making the society’s meetings a success. At the annual meeting of the Mataura Horticultural and Industrial Exhibit Society on Wednesday night the report was read and a balancesheet submitted, showing the total receipts to be £SB 8s Id, and expenditure £49 13s 2d ; leaving a credit balance of £8 14s lid. The following were elected office-bearers for the year President, Mr W* Macandrew ; Vice-President, Mr J. Park; secretary, Mr J. Maw (reelected) ; treasurer, Mr A. Balneaves, while the committee is as follows — Messrs T. Culling, C. P. Sleeman, S. Sleeman, A. Townley, P. Clark, T, Mac Gibbon, P. Winning, A. Hall, J. Mitchel, J. Thomson, A. Dickie, P. McKay, A. G. Clements, A. Smith, W. Hodges, H. Cameron’s, A. Wyllie* and Jas. Galt.
On Tuesday and Wednesday evenings shooting competitions in aid of the Presbyterian Church have been held in Mr Camerons Hall (kindlylent for the occasion.) The winners on the first evening were Messrs Shanks, Hamilton, Stewart and MacGribbon, and on the second, Dr Hendry, and Messrs Hamilton,. Strathan and MacGribbon.
