STAR v. RIVERTON.

Great interest was centred in this match owing to the close contest that resulted between these two’clubs when they met a few weeks ago. Riverton kicking off, the Colours had the wind —a fairly stiff one, and it w'as at once apparent that the visitors were ‘on the job.’ For a time give and take play resulted in neither side gaining any advantage, but eventually Jenkins ran iu and scored, Knuckey registering the major points. Shortly before half-time Ramsay scored a somewhat easy try, but the kick at goal did not enhance the score. It was thought when ends were changed Riverton would make things ‘hum.’ Such was not the case, and although the Stars were hemmed in on several occasions, they always managed to clear their lines. The light by this time was rather uncertain, and from a scrum near the Colours’ line, Mills scored the first try for Riverton. The kick at goal was a very poor one.

For the Stars it would be difficult to select any players for special mention, as each and every one played a good game, although the score should have been increased during the first spell. The three-quarters made some very nice runs and passed well. The Riverton team would have been as well without their full-back, as he mulled the ball every time. Porteous has not by any means sustained the r-eputation he came to Southland with. He did put on a bit of useful work occasionally, fiowever. M. McKay, on the wing, was a host in himself, following up well. Clark did not play up to his usual form, but made one good attempt to kick a goal from a mark. Mills was quick and lively at half, and Pattison, A. Bullman, Mitchell, Murchison, Molloy (2), Berndtson, and Me William, were responsible for the major portion of the forward work. Mr R. Mcßobie, as referee, was very good. The Garrison and City bands (combined) enlivened the proceedings. The sum of £lO odd (which goes to augment the funds of the Band Contest Committee) was taken at the gates, which represents a very fair number of spectators.
