At the London wool sales all kinds are very firm and bidding is brisk, but prices are unchanged. Starboro (New Zealand) crossbred brought 9£d per lb ; Limestone Eidge, B£d ; Karetu, 7id. Once more, after the lapse of many years, an effort is to be made to turn the Auckland Islands to account. At the last meeting of the Southland Land Board a letter was received from the Surveyor-General stating that the Minister for Lands would be pleased if the board would favourably consider the application of Mr James Gordon, of Poverty Bay, to lease the Auckland and Campbell Islands for 20 years for the grazing of sheep and cattle. The applicant stated that he intended forming a company for that purpose, and would act as ranger and report as to seal poachers. It was decided to recommend the Government to offer the Aucklauds for lease in three runs at an upset of L 5 per annum, and the Campbells, in one block at L2 10s per annum for 2i years. Mr Gordon visited the Islands during the recent cruise of the Hinemoa, and has been favourably impressed by the pastoral capabilities of the Islands.
