THE POSITION IN AMERICA

Mr G 1 assey, ex -M. L. A., an d formerly leader of the Queensland Parliamentary labor party, is making a tour of America. He says ; —•“ During my stay in San Francisco, Kansas City and Chicago—all in the West — I visited most of the labour circles, and was well received by my fellow unionists. I also visited some of the labor centres in Pittsburg, Washington, Philadelphia, New York and Boston, and in no place which I visited did I find the labor unions so far advanced in political thought as are the workers of our own colony. Previous to going to the States I thought that the working men of America were far in advance of the people of the colonies, and that during my Havels I should be able to gather a few points which would be of use to us in Queensland, but in all this I was disappointed. Trade in America is deplorably bad, and vast numbers of men and women are idle, and much poverty prevails in consequence. Just a short time before embarking on board this boat I visited the Central Council of the Labor Federation, San Francisco, and it would have made your heart bleed to have heard the reports as regards the number idle in each. I have met some splendid men during m} r tour tiu’ough the United States, many of whom are men of large means, who are spending their money to emancipate their less fortunate fellows.”
